The updated round profile of the Amazon Echo Dot with Clock is as useful as the first edition of the versatile Alexa smart speaker, and the LED display looks great.
To Amazon’s credit, the company transformed its entire cylinder-shaped Echo lineup into spheres, based on the idea that smart speakers should be seen as well as heard. But, didn’t the Echo Dot with a Clock already have a visual advantage? The Echo Dot with Clock simply took something great and made it more… round, rather than doing what it did well from the start — make something that’s practically perfect more useful.
Current owners of the Echo Dot with Clock will see no reason to upgrade, but if you’re new to Alexa or want to replace an older Echo, this Echo Dot with Clock (4th gen) review explains why it’s one of the best smart speakers available right now.

Amazon Echo Dot with Clock: LED Clock
When Amazon wondered how to improve one of the best smart home devices, the solution was as simple as adding time to the equation. It puts an LED clock beneath the fabric-covered side of the third-generation Echo Dot. It had the appearance of a basic nightstand alarm clock, which Alexa recognised.
I no longer need to ask Alexa for information I want to see at a glance, whether it’s checking the time in the mornings or setting a timer for culinary endeavours. These features on the new Echo Dot with Clock are still useful, but I’m used to holding my breath. Perhaps an additional display tool, such as a second LED line to see both the time and the temperature at the same time, similar to the $50 Lenovo Smart Clock Essential’s layout, would inspire me more. Perhaps a face that displays the date or the relative humidity.

However, I’ve become spoiled and would not want an Echo without the LED display. A part of me wished Amazon would include a clock in the fourth-generation Echo.

Amazon Echo Dot with Clock: sound
The Echo Dot with Clock is identical to the standard, displayless Echo Dot in terms of audio quality and smart home performance. The improvements over previous models are detailed in our Amazon Echo Dot (4th gen) review, but I’ll be honest and say there aren’t many changes beyond aesthetics.
While the puck-shaped Echo Dot now sounds hollower than the spherical Echo Dot, the internals are nearly identical. In side-by-side testing, the newer models have a larger chamber that helps the bass carry, which could be why Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” had more depth.
Still, if you want to fill your house with high-quality sound, the Echo Dot isn’t the smart speaker for you. Yes, it’s good for the price, but for a larger space, the Sonos One or even the Amazon Echo Studio are better options. The audio quality of the Echo Dot is adequate for a bedroom or a small kitchen.
The ‘with clock’ variety is worth the extra $10 if you have the cash. In my opinion, the $30 third-generation Echo Dot is preferable to the $50 non-clock fourth-generation Echo Dot. Regardless of which version you buy, you’ll be able to use all of Alexa’s best skills. But having an alarm clock with all of those AI-assistant features is a good thing.
Amazon Echo Dot with Clock: Alexa
There’s more to the Amazon Echo Dot with Clock than just telling time. Alexa is a smart digital assistant that establishes a cooperative foundation for all Alexa-enabled devices. You can further automate your smart home by learning how to create an Alexa routine.
The Alexa Guard, a home security feature that uses the Echo Dot’s (or any Echo speaker’s) microphones to detect when a smoke alarm goes off or glass breaks in your home, has also been improved by Amazon. If your Echo senses something out of the ordinary, it will let you know and start up routines with some of the best DIY home security systems and smart light bulbs on the market.
This Echo model can pair with and control a variety of Bluetooth-enabled smart home devices. If you have a lot of connected devices, the new Amazon Echo with Zigbee built-in might be a better choice.
It’s also one of the few Echo devices that can take advantage of the new‘motion sensing‘ feature. This works similarly to the motion sensing on the Echo Show, but instead of a camera lens, ultrasound is used.
As a result, the Echo will be aware of your location and will be able to activate any proximity-based skills you’ve set up. It’s similar to using a motion tracker, but without the extra device
To get started, go to the Alexa app and look for your device’s settings menu. Then turn Motion Sensing on.

Amazon Echo Dot with Clock Pros
- LED display is more visible
- Fuller sound than original
- Fair price for a smart alarm clock
Amazon Echo Dot with Clock Cons
- No new display features
Amazon Echo Dot with Clock: Our conclusion
Given that you can turn the display on or off whenever you want, I can’t help but think it would’ve made more sense for Amazon to include a clock with every Echo Dot this time around. Of course, the Echo Dot’s low price is part of its allure. If you’re tired of asking Alexa about the status of your timers, an extra $10 is worth it, but if you’re keeping your smart speaker mostly out of sight, the 3rd-generation Echo Dot, which is now $30 while supplies last, is a better option.
While the Echo Dot with Clock’s second generation isn’t significantly different from the first, the addition of a display improves rather than complicates the speaker. People might be more convinced to raise their home’s IQ if all IoT companies tried to solve problems using the “with Clock” approach. The goal of a connected home is to make daily life easier, and the Echo Dot with Clock’s simple improvements to a common product—the drab bedside alarm clock—continue to do just that.
